Captain Phillips - A Captain's Duty
Captain
Phillips is a survival thriller movie of hijacking of the U.S.
container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. The is inspired on the real event of Maersk Alabama Hijacking in 2009.
One
of the reasons for that attack done by Somali pirate on the ship
was globalization. As economically, globalization, reinforced the
economic downgrading of African economies and their dependence on a few primary
goods for which demand and prices are externally determined. This in return
stressed poverty and economic inequality in the country which affected the
ability of the vast number of Africans to participate implicitly in the social
and political life of their countries.
In
the movie there are two distinctive leadership style shown by Phillips
and Muse.
Captain
Phillips shows himself as a competent, responsible, selfless, who when attacked by the pirates, puts himself in danger in order to save the
crew members.
Pirate
captain Muse is an autocratic leader as he is inadequate for the job, selfish,
cruel and determined in fulfilling his aim, no matter of consequences.
The relationship between both the leaders is good as they both are listening to each other very consciously and understand other person thoughts to benefit their team. Both of them has been shown each other as strong person and admire each other thoughts. Flexible on some request or order of the other person
So, the
lessons which we can take from both of the personalities were
Risk
Taking , Responsibility towards the sub-ordinates , Listening skills , Accountability , Flexibility ,
Empowering the followers and Strategy & Planning.
But
In my opinion Muse leadership is for their survival, so a person will do
anything to survival of him and being an autocratic leader he has being on
the losing side.
Hence,
the lessons which we had learn from the movie is very hard to be implemented as
most of the times we go with the wave to complete the assigned task, but we
should take into consideration each and every aspect while making strategy and
should keep in mind the stake of others in that decision to see the whole
picture and take correct decisions.
